Palmdale Regional Bariatric Center of Excellence Achieves Exemplary Status

Friday, May 25, 2018

Palmdale Regional Medical Center (PRMC) achieved accreditation through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement program (MBSAQIP) through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in October 2015. The accreditation process is a voluntary evaluation to identify that a bariatric surgical center is in accordance with national standards. Achieving this accreditation established PRMC as a recognized center of excellence in the Antelope Valley.

To maintain the standards of accreditation, the program is continuously evaluated by the MBSAQIP. Data is collected from every bariatric surgical case and entered into a database that compiles and computes all information from the collective MBSAQIP accredited centers. This information is analyzed against the national standard, and a performance assessment is then submitted to each bariatric center semi-annually. The performance assessment is used to identify and provide an early warning sign to bariatric centers that a problem within the program may exist, as well as provide evidence that adherence to the national standards is being met.

PRMC is proud to announce that it is meeting the national standard and has been identified as ‘exemplary’ in two categories per the 2016–2017 semi-annual report: Readmission post laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was at zero percent, along with the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass related morbidity. This indicates that patients are not experiencing post-operative complications requiring medical and/or surgical intervention involving a hospital stay.

PRMC is proud for adhering to and exceeding the national standards for patient safety and care. It will be applying for accreditation renewal later this year to continue its mission to provide safe and quality care to the community it serves.

“It’s important to note that it takes an amazing team of dedicated professionals to not only achieve but exceed the high standards of the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement program (MBSAQIP)," says Dr. John Yadegar, Medical Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Center at Palmdale Regional. "I am very proud of what we’ve accomplished to continue to bring health, well-being and happiness to all our weight-loss surgical patients.”
